For 10 years, Airbnb has provided quirky, unique and out of the ordinary accommodation in every corner of the world.
Whether it’s for a short weekend break or a long-anticipated trip across the world, booking an Airbnb should definitely be on your to-do list.
We’ve gathered the best things about Airbnb to help you make your mind up!
1 – There’s Something For Everyone
With a hotel booking, amenities tend to be pretty straightforward – bed, TV, en-suite toilet and shower. Oh, and a hairdryer if you’re lucky! Knowing what you’re getting is great, but more often than not hotel rooms are just bedroom + bathroom, which can feel like you’re living on top of your friend/partner/sibling/parent even if it’s just a weekend break.
With Airbnb, there is no standard. Although this does come with risks, what it really means is that you’ll probably get the hotel ‘standard’ plus a whole lot more. From our experience, this can include anything from a cute s’mores hamper to private use of a pool and hot tub!
2 – Live With A Local
You can book 3 types of ‘places’ with Airbnb;
- a shared room
- a private room
- an entire place
We’ve only ever booked private rooms or entire places, both of which have not disappointed!
Quick Tip: Look out for ‘private entrance’ in a ‘private room’ style listing. This means you get your own private entrance that is separate to the meain house, which can be a super cheap way to have your own space if you don’t fancy mingling with your host. This place in San Francisco had the perfect set up – full use of a driveway plus a completely separate entrance, making the place feel like our own!
Most hosts have a sentence or two on their listing about what type of ‘interaction’ they prefer. In our experience, most hosts are easy going and leave the interaction up to their guests. Make sure you read the description properly though – we once saw a place where the very last line of the description pointed out that the host is a naturist. Not a problem at all, but would have been a shock to show up to if we hadn’t read the description!
Quick Tip: Dog/cat fan? Renting a room in someone’s house also comes with complimentary doggy cuddles…
3 – Reviews
Every person that books with a host has the opportunity to leave a public review. We all know that hosts are trying to promote their place and are not likely to tell you about the strange smell or noisy neighbours – but people who have stayed certainly will!
I would never consider an Airbnb without looking at the reviews. It’s important to remember that everyone has different standards, and what might be acceptable for one person may not be for another. However, if you have an open mind and are willing to take a bit of a risk, it could well pay off!
4 – Airbnb Plus
Certain occasions call for an extra special stay – enter Airbnb Plus. A recent addition to Airbnb, Airbnb Plus highlights the very best places available in some of the biggest cities across the world. Checked in-person by Airbnb staff, they boast the amenities that guests in their millions say makes their stay extra special.
Well decorated? Tick. Fast Wifi? Tick. Cooking essentials? Of course. Find out more about Airbnb Plus and decide which city is next on your bucket list!
5 – “Is it safe?!”
This is the most common question I hear about Airbnb’s. Travelling is never completely without risks, but Airbnb have enough features (verification for host and traveller, reviews, in-person verification to name a few) to ensure everyone is as safe as possible. In my opinion, the benefits of staying in some of the most unique rooms and houses in the world far outweighs the risk.
